How much does adding an addition cost?

I'm not looking for a true estimate but a ballpark range. We're looking to buy a brick bungalow that is great except that it's a bit small. How much does the average addition cost? We've seen tons of additions out there and are thinking about putting on our own addition.

We would be looking to punch out a wall and add a family room. The addition would need to be slightly raised as the property slants downward behind the house (basically 1/2 of a story). One friend estimated $20-30K and another esimated $90K! That's a big difference!

Any advice?

Hi Cathy,
I would have to say some where between 50k to 60k. This is what a contractor quoted a client of mine that I'm working with.

Cathy,
What area are you looking to do this in? If you are looking in the north east ,US, outside major cities you can range from $80.00 to $100 a square foot, finished area.
