How long does it take to build credit?

Asked by lyn89135, Las Vegas, NV Fri Oct 12, 2012

I want to buy a house and was looking at March of 2013. I called my bank and was told I do not have enough credit history. My first car loan was in 2006, I have 3 current credit cards and a score of about 700 -720? I am curious as to how long it takes to get a good credit history?

Hi Lyn89135,

Direct Banks like Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase, etc. will have stricter guidelines that they go by in order to approve someone for a mortgage.

I'm very curious. Why, with those credit scores there where not able to get you qualified. How long have you had the credit cards? Did they specify what type of credit you need to build? It could take 3 to 6 months to a year to build credit.

From the information you given here. I may have two lenders that may be able to help you get approved for a home mortgage.

I use Jennifer Caro with Castle & Cooke Mortgage often. She is very helpful. Will explain the process and let you know exactly what you would need to do to build your credit. If she cannot get you approved now. Her cell is 702.595.6881 and her email is

Jared Penn with First Cal. His cell is 702.419.6342 and email address is

I would love to help you get in to your new home. Feel free to contact me.

Best Regards,

Shop around for a reliable mortgage broker, they have access to many banks, private lenders and many different mortgage programs. Select one that can answer all your questions and concerns on the first meeting.

It has been a while since you last posted. Are you still in the market for a home. I can also recommend a lender if you would like to check on your situation.

Why not run your own FREE credit report and see exactly what the report is showing. A 720 score is really good, there must be something in the report that needs to be looked at

Look elsewhere. Your summary of your condition would seem to indicate that you are well able to get financing. Try working with a mortgage broker who has access to many lenders. Good luck

Did that bank actually run a credit report on you,? 700 FICO is more than enough. Something doesn't sound right

Yes they ran my credit. I was trying to build my credit history and went for a BOA rewards card, I was denied due to lack of credit history. I was going to try for a BOA mortgage, but if I cant get their card I assume they will not give me a mortgage. Thanks for your answers!

A great starting point to quickly building your credit, especially if you don't have any negative credit reporting:

Go 2 banks and open a secured line of credit for $500 - $1000 each. It's like a credit card, but you actually put the money in the line of credit up-front (hence it is secured). Use the cards every month, pay a portion of it back, then use the card again... don't pay off the same month, and do use it.

You'll quickly build some good credit.

If any of your credit cards are over 1 year old, you should have no problem getting a house loan now. Please call me and I will set you up with some loan officers that can assist you immediately.
