How does HUD's Good Neighbor Next Door program work? Is it really as easy as it sounds?

It is not too easy but well worth it if you fit the mold.

You would have to be a firefighter, teacher, EMT or police officer willing to move to a HUD designated revitaliztion area. You can look for areas in your state by following this link:

http://hud.uai.com/hudpls/FindArea.aspx

You would have to find a HUD owned home in the area of your choice. You have to be pretty quick with your offers when you see something you like.

If you buy a home you have to live there for three years. The 50% discount is held as a second mortgage and then released or forgiven after three years.

I hope this was helpful.

Good luck.

Perhaps you'd be interested in looking at this site. It is a Fed. Gov. site and has all the current Fed Gov. programs... You can get specific information, compare options, or take a short questionnaire to determine your eligibility for each program.
