The best way to determine what you can afford in any area is by first speaking to a lender. The lender will provide counseling after evaluating your credit, income, and other pertinent factors, as well as determining what you can afford. Be wise to ask what fees you should expect from each lender you consult with. Lender's charge different fees and it can be a substantial difference between each. I'd start with my bank or credit union first, and then some of the major lender's like Countrywide or Washington Mutual. This will give you a starting point for your price search.
If you have a recent credit report, bring it will you to refer too I suggest getting one from all three credit bureau’s with your score to provide to the lender, and it keeps the bank from having to pull your credit until you are ready to purchase. Please see the website below.

Best of Luck!

Counseling will help you learn each step in home buying, and you won't be vulnerable to deception from incompetent Realtors or lenders.
Additionally, counselors provide information about down payment assistance and lower-interest loans, some of which are available only to buyers who have undergone counseling. Contact A U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-certified counselor connected with a non-profit organization. To find one, call HUD at 800-569-4287 or Fannie Mae at 800-7-Fannie or log onto Fannie Mae's Web site at http://www.fanniemae.com.

Typically, with good credit and 5% down payment, you can figure roughly your monthly payment will be $700.00 per 100,000 borrowed, that includes taxes, payment and insurance. You are welcome to contact me and I can give you specific info...
