Try asking that question in a chat room like moms like me on RGJ etc. You will just get beat around the bush answers from most Realtor's as this site is shopped by Fair Housing administration for violations of fair housing laws and believe it or not, we are not allowed to help you directly answer this question except perhaps from a purely statistal/economic perspective.
Even questions about walking distance, family neighborhoods, churches, crime etc. may get us in trouble in this polital correct society of ours.
http://www.rgj.com is a good first stop or Reno News and Review has a decent chat room also but can be colorful.

I would ask you, what is it your looking for? Are you looking for homes in the mountains, the city, the valley? Do you want to be by a stream, a golf course, near the airport? What price and size of home are you looking for?
As a full time, full service, Professional Realtor I welcome the opportunity to be of service. My background and experience set me apart from any Realtor® in the area. My past experience includes having played five years of Professional Baseball in the St. Louis Cardinal’s Organization. I was an account manager with 3M Company and owned two local businesses. I've been a multi-million dollar producer for over ten years now, having sold for Coldwell Banker, RE/MAX and now Trans-Action Realty. My past sales and business experience, along with having lived in Reno since 1979, give me a competitive edge that can help you with your real estate needs.

Good luck in your home search.
As others have said, the desirable zip codes are dependent on what you are looking for.
My goal with the relocation clients I work with is to give them a FULL overview of the area --- we do not even look at houses the first time we go out. I give a tour of the community, where is the baseball park, restaurants, the entertainment, downtown, shopping, neighborhoods, parks, airport and so on. This allows me to get to know my client and also provides them with a good idea of what is available.
I would love the opportunity to spend a few hours showing you around and discussing what your needs are. Most importantly, showing you "why Reno-Sparks-Northern Nevada" in the first place : )
I remain at your service and welcome the chance to introduce you to our community.

Any zip code in Reno is desirable in some way. Perhaps it is where family lives; schools there are preferred, close proximity to work, etc. So, an area can be ideal for one person to purchase but then it may not be desirable for your particular situation.
What I suggest you do is first make a list of criteria you are looking for in a house and neighborhood. Once you know what it is you want, then, along with your realtor, you can decide what neighborhoods would be the best fit for your criteria. Without first determining what it is you want and need from a property and a neighborhood, it would be frustrating for all to spend time viewing houses that would not fit your lifestyle.

It would be worthwhile to speak to an agent and to communicate what you are really looking for. Out of this conversation, the right zip codes will surface. I can help when you're ready.
It depends on what you are basing your search on...schools, shopping, public transportation, crime. There are many websites that you can use to help you in your search for the right neighborhood. I would be happy to help you. Please contact me at your earliest convenience at KGil@InteroReno.com
