East Lake, Oakhurst, and Kirkwood are all the same general area and police zone. In addition to checking with the Police Crime Maps, you may also want to talk to people residing in the area. My suggestion is to go to their Farmer's Market, Assoc Meetings, and some local hang outs. No area is immune from crime. And living in the City of Atlanta is very different from living in Valdosta.
Otherwise it is a good area to buy as far as values, access to other intown neighborhoods, and plenty of renovated homes. Of course, there are lots of factors to consider when relocating to a new area.
(btw - that house the other agent is promoting is far enough away from East Lake that it is a totally different feel than East Lake. as well as different zip code)
In addition to the previous great suggestions, you should visit the neighborhood at various times of day/night, weekday/weekend. Walk around the neighborhood, and spend time just hanging out and observing the people you see. Ask yourself if you want these people for neighbors and friends. No amount of statistical data will give you as much insight into this or any neighborhood as your personal observations.

Here are a few links with information on the East Lake area of Dekalb County, GA. Hopefully this will help.
