There might be parts of Staten Island that even Staten Islanders don't know about. One of these neighborhoods is Park Hill, nestled along the Grymes foothills just south of Stapleton. Fewer Staten Islanders might remember that Park Hill is the former home of the National Football League in Staten Island. The Stapes were a semipro team founded by restaurateur Dan Blaine in 1915, who played halfback for the team until 1924. Over the following couple of seasons, the Stapes would play exhibitions against pro teams from the NFL and the 1920s version of the American Football League, and after they rolled up a 10-1-1 record in 1928 the Stapes joined the NFL the next season, playing in tiny Thompson’s Stadium on Tompkins Avenue, a site now occupied by Stapleton Housing (located between Broad, Hill and warren Streets and Tompkins Avenue, itself named for a 19th-Century area resident, Daniel D. Tompkins, Vice President under James Monroe from 1817-1825.

The 120th Precinct is located on the North Shore of Staten Island and encompasses all of the area north of the Staten Island Expressway. The area consists of residential communities and commercial districts. The residential communities consist of detached homes, multiple dwellings, apartment houses, seven major public housing developments and two federally subsidized housing complexes. While smaller family owned businesses are commonly found throughout the command, the larger business and commercial centers are located on or adjacent to the major thoroughfares along Forest Avenue, Port Richmond Avenue, Bay Street, Victory Blvd., Richmond Terrace and Castleton Avenue. These business centers are supported by the many residential communities, which border them, as well as outside communities from both on and off Staten Island.

Do your own homework first--Visit a neighborhood several times to get a sense of “belonging”. Check out area statistics; real estate professionals are prohibited from “steering”—enticing a buyer to purchase, or not, in specific neighborhoods; so, you should check out demographics on your own to assure your comfort level can be reached. As far as safety is concerned your best source of information is the local police department--why not stop in and ask all your questions--they'll glagly answer, and you'll be happy to have heard the information first hand--as for the school--why not call or visit the district--ask for test scores, special programs, etc.
