Getting the keys

Asked by letisha Rodriguez, 95209 Sat Oct 13, 2012

Does our realtor have to give us out keys at the house? We really don't want him to be there. This is our first home and I want to experience this moment with my family only! Not my realtor.

There's no reason for the agent to be there if those are your wishes. Just make sure everything has been cleared and then simply ask them if you can just pick up the keys or have him/her drop it off.

Congrats on your first home.

Did you already do the final walk thru? If you have and don't want your Realtor there, you may be able to pick up the key from the office receptionist or get the key box code if there is one on the property? Congratulations on your purchase.

A good Realtor understands that thier clients come first. The Agent could simply drop by the home before the title records (when ownership actually transfers) or stop by the home prior to the delivery of the keys. In my opinion most Realtors including myself, do enjoy handing the keys over to our happy clients. However, I would be completely on-board with my clients wishes.

Cindy's right; just let your agent know what you have in mind.

It is a good idea to have your Realtor there to verify the property is still in the same condition and everything is in order as the property officially transitions from the sellers possession to yours, especailly if there are any changes, items missing, damage, etc. This could only benefit you in terms of liability. For myself, the biggest reward of this career is handing the keys to the new homeowners as it is such a special moment and major investment, but ultimately the decision should be yours whether you want the agent present or meet elsewhere to pick up the keys.

If you have closed escrow and the home is yours now, congratulations!

Keys are usually given to the buyer's agent from the listing agent. That said, why don't you say this exact thing to your Realtor? He or she can give you the keys then take off so you can have your own experience. Just be honest!

Congratulations! You can recieve your keys anywhere. Title company, agents office or even at the home with a combo lock box or for that matter under the mat or in the electrical utility box.

No he does not have to, however most clients are not opposed to their realtor being present especially if he/she was instrumental in them getting the home in the first place.
