Like Kim, I am also from California and have found the Middle Tennessee area to be a great place to live. I was welcomed with open arms and a lot of people waving (something you get use to over time). Although I miss SoCal I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed meeting Tennesseans each and every day.
As you can see from this thread there is a lot of great advice and websites which you can go to which will help you in determining the perfect area for you. Let me know if I can be of assistance.
I am also a native Californian. I was born not too far from you in Merced, CA and spent most of my life, (well over 40 years) in the Los Angeles Area.
We moved to Tennessee in 2005 from Redondo Beach. We bought a wonderful loft in the heart of downtown Nashville and a beautiful home in Franklin, Tennessee. There are many gay couples here and I can tell you, you will be made welcome. There are also many Californians here and they too will reach out to you and get you acclimated to Tennessee life.
Please contact me should you decide to relocate. My son is the self proclaimed "Mayor of Nashville" and he can show you all of the "hot spots" and private clubs you will for sure enjoy.
Take care and hope to speak to you soon.
I would recommend against living outside of Davidson County, if you can. The "big city" of Nashville is not like the east coast glop or the west coast sprawl; I would imagine you can find a number of neighborhoods in Nashville that will suit you.
Good luck on your move!
Welcome to middle TN. As an agent I am sure you have realized I have to be careful with my answers. I will tell you that I have helped many similar couples find their dream homes here in Clarksville, TN. We are about 45min-1 hour north of nashville. Since the military has changed the dont ask dont tell policy we have had a booming number of couples with different lifestyles calling clarksville home.
If I can help in any way, or if you would like to contact some of my past clients about the area please call me anytime. Check out my recommendations.

Determining to the answers to questions on any of the topics listed above is something that you would need to do on your own. It is up to the individual to make their own determination about a specific area. If a real estate agent were to comment on such a thing, it could be steering which is a prohibited act.

As Marilyn suggested, check out the local GLBT publications.
Here is a link to the GLBT newspaper in the area:
That may be a good starting point. I think you'll find the cost of living here exponentially lower than Northern California. Good luck with your search. I'll be happy to help you in any other way I can.
I understand that you want to get this information, and I would encourage you to ask your question on other forums, where there aren't as many Realtors who are answering the questions. Then, when you hire an agent, you can tell them the areas you are interested in.
I wish you the best. If I can be of further assistance, feel free to contact me through my profile info.
