Flood zones in Westchester NY

Asked by SKI16, Bronx, NY Thu Mar 25, 2010

What areas of Westchester county are often flooded during storms? Should this be a reason to stay away from a home, even if it's a good deal? Are there any areas of Briarcliff or Pleasant Valley that often get flooded?

Hi SkI16,

Any property in low-lying areas will require flood insurance before you purchase the property. For example, Mamaroneck, Larchmont, Rye. Agents can't tell you to stay away from a home (but they are required to tell you if a property is in a flood zone). Also, lenders will require flood insurance before you buy. It is a good idea to check the link (from the answer below) to ease your mind.
