Do you advise paying for survey stakes after a survey, as each costs $175? We are planning to install a fence in any case.

The property has neighbors on both sides without any fences and only trees at the back. Old survey markers if any are probably buried under the foliage and the current owners have been living in the house for 18 years without any additions, reducing any possibility of recent surveys. We already got the survey done and the survey company would like us to sign a survey stakes waiver with very few pros/cons in the waiver form. Are survey markers only to installed by the surveyor or can we install them on our own for less than $175?

I would pay for the stakes, especially if you want to put in a fence. You will have to apply for a permit for the fencing, and show where it will be using a copy of the survey. Some towns do not allow it to be right on the property line so knowing your exact property lines is a must.

You must have the surveyor do it, as you do not have the proper equipment to place them yourself, and if they are off, it could cause problems later on.

If you end up placing the survey stakes yourself, the responsibility would fall more on your shoulders if they are off. If you pay the survey company to do it, responsibility falls more on their end, depending on what their waiver stipulates. I personally would spend the extra money for the survey company to do it, just for peace of mind. The extra $175 will seem small in comparison to the cost incurred when you have to have it resurveyed, tear down the fence and rebuild it a foot from where you put it before, because the neighbors think you put it in the wrong place.
