Hello Desi,
In a nutshell, they will treat the affected part of the property as if it were their own.
Usually towns have an agreement with the owner that they will replace / repair the affected area to a condition similar to the way it was before the work began. An agreement such as this should be in writing. Depending on the extent to which the easement affects the rest of the property, I'd have an attorney review any and all relevant documentation.
Good luck!
