That's a tough question, because it's very subjective and everybody will have a different opinion. You may be able to afford more than you think if you can get some grant money and maybe some free money from the government - Uncle Sam's way of thanking you for helping to stabilize the US real estate market. You may qualify for the 2009 First Time Home Buyer Tax Credit (check out my video on the topic at http://www.youtube.com/DialloStevens).

I'm running an informational seminar in Queens near Flushing Meadows Park on Saturday at 10AM for first time homebuyers. I think that I would check with the NYPD web site for crime rates in the areas that you are interested in. Also keep in mind that some areas some blocks are better than others.

Since you have a listingbook, I am assuming you are working with a Realtor, and if so what is he/she advising you to do; are you phisically visiting the houses or just going by the photos. I am assuming that you visited with a loan officer, are pre-qualified and know what your budget can handle, but if you haven't that is a must before coming to any budgetary conclusions.
