Quincy IL is in Adams County.
For 2008 the taxes in the city limits are 7.28% of 1/3 the value of the house.
So assuming you are talking a $200,000 sales price you would have .0728*200000/3 or $4,853
For the current year you buy the house and the year after you would pay OLD taxes.
Not until 3rd year would you pay the $4,853
Taxes are due in June for the year prior (that's why the two-year delay on assessing the sale price).
So in June of 2009 you pay 2008 taxes as of Jan 1, 2008 assessment. But, in actuality, the seller will pay this at closing. So in 2009 you won't actually pay anything, June 2010 you will pay taxes based on the Jan 1,2009 assessment (your realtor should be able to tell you this). Then, in June 2011 you will pay taxes based on the sales price of the house.
Propety taxes are caculated as a percentage of assesed value. Most counties have websites for the value & percantage. For a quick estimate on a purchase transaction I use between 1.5 - 2% of the purchase price for anticipated taxes.
thanks, I have contacted them and hope they can help.
I was wondering about that. Your question actually went into the Quincy, Massachusetts category. So I didn't know if that was where you were moving from. I know squat about Quincy, IL but I do know most of your answers will come from County information. Quincy is in Adams County and this web site should help you:
http://www.co.adams.il.us/government_officials/index.htm
Also, there can be big differences between "assessed value", "market value", "appraised value" and "asking price". I hope the downloads that the website provides can answer some of those questions for you as well.

I was searching for property taxes in Quincy Illinois. I was born there and lived there until I was 13. I have recently visited the area again and am considering a move back. I can't seem to find out about the property taxes. If the house were assessed at $200,000, what would the yearly taxes be?
In Cook County (Chicago and some suburbs) they are coming out any day now. There also has been a lot of news lately dealing with all sorts of taxes. I'd spend some time reading the Chicago Tribune to get a bigger picture of things. Read the headlines and the real estate sections including the map of sales increases and decreases for different areas. http://www.ChicagoTribune.com
About 10 years ago, my monthly MORTGAGE payment in Cook County was actually lower than a co-workers PROPERTY TAX monthly escrow for DuPage County (Glendale Heights). But I own a home in Oak Park and in Western Springs and both are in Cook County. The houses are almost identical but the Oak Park home is over assessed and the Western Springs home is under assessed. I pay TWICE as much in property taxes for Oak Park as I do for Western Springs. But my appeal for Oak Park will change that and I'll know the exact figure in about a month. The reverse is probably true for the neighbors. I bet my Western Springs neighbors pay TWICE as much as my Oak Park neighbors pay.
I hope this has helped some. Is there a particular area you were looking at?
