Can you tell me a little about the Mobile area?

Hammond, LA

I might be looking to move there. I am a LA native now, and have never been to Mobile other than work. Specifically, I am interested in an area: 1) SAFE-friendly environment, 2) geared towards first time home buyers, 3) home to young professionals, 4) maybe close to happening hot spots.

I love all the extra features that the trulia site offers but I need to hear from locals. I don't have to be in Mobile directly, so anything surrounding will work.

It certainly seems like you can get a lot of home for not a lot of money. I'm looking at prices 175K and under.

In addition to highlighting some burbs or subdivisions, please tell me what you can about the market. Is the market still strong, what's inventory like, and how long are places sitting on the market?

Thanks in advance for your time and help!

Hello,

Without any BS, I have lived in Mobile for 14 years, and moved away 18 months ago. If you do not already have a job there, then Mobile is NOT the place to be.

If you DO have a job there, then it is more enjoyable. Everything is pretty and green, lots of trees. Mobile is the city with the most rain in the USA, although some years Seattle,Washington takes that spot, and Mobile is #2.
Humidity is very high in Mobile, more so than in South Florida (where I lived 5 years.

I have a beautiful 3 bedroom, 2 bath brick home on 3/4 of an acre. It is near all the hot spots which are on
Schillinger Road. It would be a 12 mile run to where most jobs are by interstate 65 or I-H10 going towards Theodore. If you work at the shipyards, it would be 39 miles each way. Downtown Mobile would be about
25 miles away. Barbara Higgins with Prudential has my house up for sale.

It's free to look.

Hello, My name is Ann Backhurst; I am a Sales Associate with Roberts Brothers Inc., one of the largest real estate agencies in the area. We have offices in many locations including across the Bay on the Eastern Shore. I specialize in homes in the $175,000 range and under. I am familiar with the area you are moving from and feel I could help you from the home of your dreams. Now is a good time for a first time buyer to purchase a home because you will be eligible for the $8,000 IRS tax credit.

The mid-town area is wonderful for young professionals. If you are interested in downtown areas, there are a number of lofts available. There are very nice homes in the surrounding area. I just sold one in the West Mobile with a beautiful swimming pool, which is nice for entertaining.

The market in Mobile is strong and blooming, We have a nice inventory of all styles of homes, and many of the homes in the price range you are interested in don't sit on the market very long here.

Call me at anytime and I will be glad to help you relocate to this wonderful city. Let me know your needs and specificiations and I will help you find that special home. Ann Backhurst, Roberts Brothers Inc. West (251-604-5998)

Hi,
I will not go into more about Mobile as my peers here have covered most of the bases. Bottom line: Mobile is changing fast while keeping its grand traditions and down home feel. The vibe reminds me of Charleston< SC about 20 years ago when it began it's renaissance. Mobile is well on it's way to becoming a great city and now is certainly the time to become par of the future.

Beaches and boating is another cool aspect to the area. Within 40 minutes of downtown is Dauphin island, the last inhabited beachfront barrier island on the southern coast before you hit Texas. Many folks are moving there and commuting into Mobile. A modern bridge connects it to Mobile and a ferry connects it across the bay to Baldwin county.

Nearby in Biloxi is gambling, shows and all that entails on the coast.

I have some links and videos to scenes around Dauphin Island on my website if you want to see more of the surrounding area beyond Mobile.

Just in case your question is still open. Mobile is a relaxed city. Across the bay is even more relaxed.
Cost of living is low, 87. 1)
comparison between San Antonio, TX and Mobile, AL using $35k as base.
The cost of living in Mobile, AL is 10.8% higher than in San Antonio, TX. Therefore, you would have to earn a salary of $38,763 to maintain your current standard of living. 2)

West Mobile for newer homes, midtown for charm and closer more traditional lots, closer to downtown is similar to the Garden district in New Orleans. Lots of homes to view.
77 days on market as of Dec 2008 3)

HI THERE!

I am so happy to see the huge influx of people coming to our area from ALL over the world. I moved to Mobile 10 years ago and have lived here off and on ever since. I LOVE this city. It has everything that a larger city has and is still able to keep that "laid back" feeling that the South is so well known for. I would definitely recommend moving to the midtown area. You will most likely be in a historic district if you do. I would also recommend moving into a home that could use a little updating...we bought our home 5 years ago and have spent our summers and weekends doing minor renovations and now have a show home. My best friend/neighbor is a broker/flipper and bought a fabulous home on S Lafayette st for 130 k and has put 60k into it and it is PHENOMENAL. I actually helped her sell a home to a couple in CA by way of a 360 degree virtual tour. We took extensive photos of the community and provided an in-depth tour of the home and they were hooked! If you'd like to see an example of one of these tours, please visit the following link:

They are a great way to look at several homes without forking out money for a plane ticket. If you see something you'd like to further investigate, have your realtor contact me. Our rates our below average and we showcase everything but how the home smells :). You can also check out my website at:

Anyhow, enough of that...I think you will love our city. It has become an exciting place for young professionals.

Best of luck to you!

Hi,
My name is Jenny Dees. I work for Prudential Cooper In Mobile, AL. It's a local family ownerd and operated real estate company. Yeah i agree it is hard to find out or even get a feel for mobile if you have never been here. Even if you have and it wasn;t in the last 2 years mobile is really growing. If you listen to the news it talks about a slow market etc... I will honestly tell you that of course we could always use more business but i am steadily busy with buyers and sellers everyday. Also what would bring you to mobile. Midtown is a very popular area for young professionals it is pretty much close to evreything. Also new families and first time homebuyers love the midtown area and what is has to offer. I think you will have lots of options in mobile. If you would like so you can get a little more info on it email me an address where i can overnight you a relocation package and it has all kinds of info that could be helpful.my email is jennydees@prucooper.com Or if you have lots of questions call my cell 251-583-5501 I would be happy to help you any way i can.
