Originally, it was home to the Raritan Indians until the British had acquired the land in 1684 by the English through the Treaty of Breda. In 1692, Daniel Perrin was granted the land, which was known as Smoking Pt, by Governor Benjamin Fletcher. In the mid 1700's, the area was known as Blazing Star after the tavern that was there and was a major ferry port for going to Woodbridge Township, NJ. During the early 1800's, oyster trade was very common in the part that was known as Sandy Ground. In 1827. In the 1830's, the area was renamed as Rossville after Colonel William E Ross. Rossville became very populated as the 1860's when people from the SIRT came over from the Prince's Bay Station. Unfortunately, a fire in 1963, known as the Rossville Fire, had destroyed at least 100 homes making people living there homeless. In 1976, more decline came when the West Shore Expwy cut off most access to the Arthur Kill. Nevertheless, Arthur Kill had recovered in the last few decades. Its park includes South Shore GC, which is open to the public. The Blazing Star Cemetery not only just has tombstones for those who have died there, but also a bunch of wrecked ships as well as some cars, which is one of the largest marine scrapyards on the east coast, the Witt Marine Scapyard. You can get here by taking the S55, S56, S74

Rossville has many large townhouse communities bordering Rossville Ave. There are also many semi detached homes all the way up to larger detached homes, with some facing the South Shore golf course.
Rossville is near to West Shore expressway, S.I. Rapid Transit and many express and local buses. The local elementary school is only a few years old. All types of stores and restaurants are nearby. Plenty of parks, dog runs, nearby beaches. You can get actual statistics right here on Trulia.
There are many homes available right now in Rossville and in the adjoining communities.

Rossville covers about one square mile. There are differing opinions about its exact boundaries, but most recognize the section delineated by the Arthur Kill, Huguenot Avenue, Woodrow Road and, along the west and southwest, a section of Bloomingdale Road and another of the West Shore Expressway. Woodbrooke Estates and Fawn Ridge, two town-house condominium developments at the center of the neighborhood, have the most affordable housing. A major shopping center on Woodrow Road has a post office, a grocery store and several restaurants. The median sales price for homes in Rossville, Staten Island for Jan 10 to Mar 10 was $308,500 based on 32 sales. Compared to the same period one year ago, the median sales price decreased 8.5%, or $28,500, and the number of sales decreased 8.6%. Average price per square foot for Rossville was $219, a decrease of 0.9% compared to the same period last year.

There are currently 124 resale and new homes in Staten Island on Trulia, including 37 homes in the pre-foreclosure, auction, or bank-owned stages of the foreclosure process. The average listing price for homes for sale in Rossville was $503,314 for the week ending Mar 31, which represents an increase of 1.6%, or $7,824, compared to the prior week.
