I have recently spent some time interviewing design/build firms here in Berkeley and was very impressed with Levitch Associates. They are a great local and family business.

I agree that it really depends on what you are trying to achieve, what your budget is, and what style you are drawn to. Every architect and contractor has their own strengths, and less strengths, and biases. I try to tailor my recs to the specific situation.

It TOTALLY depends on the style you are looking for and your budget – if you have seen anything locally that you like, find out who the architect/designer was. You can often get this information by checking the plans at City Hall or just asking a lot of questions. Architects come in many different flavors and budgets – you should have a clear idea of the look you want – tons of pictures are VERY helpful – meet with a few, look at their portfolios and decide which one is the best for you. Most architects have a very good idea of which contractors they prefer to work with:

Here are a couple of Architects I’ve worked with – they are both VERY different in terms of style, scope of project and so on:

Jack Sullivan
Architect

Try architects Todd Jersey (510-524-5666) or Maxwell Beaumont (510-652-4433; mbeaumont@earthlink.net).
My favorite general contractor is Adam Palacios of Palacios Bros. (510-967-8225; adampalacios@yahoo.com): small family-run business, high ethics & service/very reasonable prices.
Please tell these folks I sent you!
Good luck!
