At this point in time, it sounds like from what you are stating, that you will not qualify for purchasing a home, anywhere in the us.
I'm confirming that you do need to have 2 years of employment. If you have a transit job and may continue to work from a remote state, you may have job credit history, and that issue would be resolved for you.
Loan qualification is based on credit, current paystubs / income, bank statements - savings and checking accounts, and debt/expenses. Since you state that your credit is not so great and looking to put little money down, most likely you will not qualify for an FHA loan which requires a 640 + credit score, (check on that score number as it has changed from time to time). You most likely will be required to save more money for the down payment if your credit score falls below that number.
