I am looking into a purchase opportunity, but the housing seems haphazard and Icannot get a feel for the street or surrounding neighborhood.
I grew up in the neighborhood and if i knew then what I know now, would still be in that area. I lived on Grand Avenue and the neighborhood is very safe. Clifton and Grand have outdoor cafes now. You have a mix of races living there which to me is always a good thing. I have a very close friend that lives on Clifton near Tompkins in the new homes and she was a skeptic about moving there because the block have a small project across the street. She has never had a problem. She goes and comes as she pleases and believe you me she is a very scary person. Hope this helps and good luck with your search.
DC- Check these sites ..Everyblock.com gives a wealth of local data: recent sales, crime stats, local blogs and info on retialers. Both Clinton Hill Blog and Bedstuy Blog are good as well> both accessible from Brownstowner.com or independently. The respondent below was incomplete in his description of Clifton...Grand to Franklin Ave"s have mixed 3 an 4 story residential brownstone stock and new condo offerings and is still technically Clinton Hill . Franklin to Bedford Ave has commercial lots and businesses...Auto Repair, Recyclers, Woodworking and Metal Fabricator,etc.....Bedford Ave onward (true BedStuy) contains many 4 story 20x40 brownstones in various states of repair. There are opportunities to be had depending on your desired outcome...Investor w Rentals vs Homeowner w Tenants, etc. This area runs along the G line and is popular housing area for Pratt students. As a 20+ yr resident of this area i can attest
to its transition to a more livable place.
Good Luck on your search! Please reach out if there's more you need!

It's not one of the A list blocks in Bed-Stuy; it's mostly very modest 3-story brownstones, and many blocks of the street are pretty run down. It gets nicer closer to Clinton Hill (Beford Avenue), but again, if you're looking for more quality - in terms of architecture, and what you can charge for rent - you're better off looking on the south side of Bed-Stuy, closer to the A-C trains.
