We will be moving to Dallas in the Fall and are wondering what the best communities for families with young children will be. We want to stay around the $150k price range but are looking for a large yard, decent square footage, good neighborhood, near parks. Any ideas of where to start looking?

The lake near Rockwall is Lake Ray Hubbard. The sailboats on that lake are a sight to be seen. With a $150k budget, you really have your choice of areas. The average price of a home in DFW is in the mid-$140's. Good schools abound. Dallas is HUGE, though, so your wish list should start with where your job may be located and branch out from there. Traffic patterns may dictate the areas in which to focus your search. From there, the age of the home you might consider buying and the size of the yard and square footage of the home will narrow the search. Start with an in-depth interview with a Realtor to determine your needs and your wants for your home search. Then, a preview tour of homes in one or several cities/towns may be in order to familiarize you with the area. Online searches are great, but previewing homes in person is very educational. Then, when your buying timeframe rolls around, you know your likes and dislikes and the search is much simpler. Getting you pre-approved for your home loan is a critical element in our market, or you may not be able to execute a contract as quickly as someone who has already been pre-approved. You don't want the house you fall in love with to be the one that got away.

Have a blessed day!

I saw the article in Family Circle and immediately fell in love with the photo and all the great things I have read about Rockwall. Does anyone know how big the Lake near it is? I will do some more research on the other areas mentioned as well. Thanks!

Depending on traffic rockwall may or may not be a good commute. They are building the 190 tollway down between rockwall and rowlett. this should alleviate some of the traffic issues. Depending on what size yard and what sqft you are looking for $150k may be a little low to find something in Rockwall. Depending on the location. I would almost say Rowlett would be better at that price range. Wylie would also be a good option at that price range.

You might want to consider Richardson and the southern end of Plano. Both are wonderful communities with excellent schools and your commute would be a lot less.

You seem to have done some homework because Rockwall is at the top of my list and it just got nominated by Family Circle magazine as "The Best city to live in". It is very self sufficient here, shopping, dining, medical facilities, choice of worship places, excellent education. Only the best. It is a lake living community.

You may want to consider Rowlett as well, which is right next to Rockwall, you will have a lot more homes to choose from in your price range. It also would put you a bit closer to your work location. If you don't mind older neighborhoods, I woudl suggest Richardson as well.

Feel free to peruse homes on my website. Just click on the Rockwall link... http://www.mydfwlakehome.com

Rockwall is a great area, excellent schools, close to the lake, shopping and I30. The commute for you would be about 15 miles, but if you have 8-5 work hours it will be very congested, but should take 45-60 minutes. Rockwall is one of my favorite areas too, the prices are a little higher, but a great choice and suburb. You are definitely on the right track.

Thanks for all the answers so far. The commute will be to the North East area (around where LBJ Freeway & 75 intersect). Hope that makes sense.

With just looking at various sources, I have found Rockwall to be among my favorites so far. Would that be a long commute? I am very open to all areas.

Thanks for all the great info everyone!

There are several Dallas Suburbs that could offer you some really great choices. Wylie is very affordable and family friendly. The school district is exceptional and there are alot of master planned communities with parks, pools, bike and jog trails. You can get a newer home in an area like this. Please let me know if you would like additional information or if you would like me to help with narrowing your area selection please call me anytime at 214-909-6680 or email lisajonessells@yahoo.com. I have lived in the Dallas area for 30 years and would be glad to send you some examples of the homes you can get in your price range in different locations to give you an idea of what is available.

Have A Great Evening!

I am a Realtor and Live and Specialize in Forney Tx. It is in my opinion a great community and offers a brand new great community park that will be expanding to over 123 acres. You can find out much more information about Forney at my website below. Also I have lived all over the DFW area so I have a very cast knowledge of the area as a whole and would love to help yall look at any different communities you may be interested in. I provide personal and responsive services and my lack of a large name broker allows me to rebate 20% of my commission after closing.

Thanks

As my fellow Realtors have mentioned there are many factors to consider when choosing a neighborhood. I am providing a link to my website. Put in your price range and size criteria a map wil appear with all of the homes available in the Dallas area that meet your specifications. You can then hone in on a specific area by highlighting the area and dragging to cover the map. You can save this search and create a password to revisit and create other searches. Go to http://www.dallasnative.com/neighborhoods/dallas.html
While you are in my website check out the relocation page, it is full of information about our great city and also visit the Dallas information page for school information.

If I can be of futher assistance in your relocation, let me know. If you have not lived a life time in Dallas choose the Realtor who has.

Where will you be commuting to? That is very important to know to recommend areas.

In your price range, the possibilities would be endless.
