Depending on the size of the home you are looking for, and the price range, central NJ has a lot to choose from whether it's a single family home or a condo.
Of all the areas there is Metuchen, which has only one elementary, middle and high school ranked very well, a great walkable "downtown", it has a train station to NY, and is close to Route 1, the GSP, the Turnpike, and Route 287.
There is also New Providence and Berkeley Heights, which also have high ranking school systems (According to the NJ school reportcard) as well as train stations to NY, and are close to Route 78 and Route 22, which take you to Rt 287 and the GSP and other major highways.
I work in all these areas (plus others) and would be happy to speak to you to determine your needs and match you up wioth a town that meets them.
Feel free to give me a call at 908-675-0167 or email me at PruMarynj@aol.com for a no obligation discussion. :)

I'm not sure what you personally would consider to be affordable or what is your budget,
but I can throw out a few cities like Summit, Maplewood, Millburn, Westfield, Glen Ridge,
Cranford and Livingston- just to name a few based on schools, commutability and convenience to downtown areas or local avenues for restaurants and shopping.
But to narrow your options down and to best advise you, I would need a bit more info from you
as far as budget and other important factors or criterias you may have regarding your future home.
I am open to discuss your housing needs further if you'd like.
