Make sure that they look at the piping in several locations. Copper might be present in only part of the house and you won't know what is behind the walls. It is also a good idea to find out what type of pipe is bringing water to the house, you can usually find this near the water meter. Good luck.

Is it practical to test each water source, hot and cold, for plastic content from PVC/PEX. If water were allowed to stand overnight for example, the water might pick up plastic content as well as lead. Otherwise, it would be hard to know what pipes' composition is when concealed behind walls and ceilings.

A quick look at the pipes in the basement (if it is not finished) or a look under the sink will most likely let your friend know. If the basement is finished and/or the piping under the sinks have been replaced, then an engineer hired to inspect the home will be able to tell her the material of the plumbing. Or your friend could probably ask the homeowner, if he/she is available.

When your licensed home inspector conducts an inspection, he/she will be able to tell you all about the plumbing, including copper, or not...
