As a former elementary teacher, I moved to Hingham because of the schools. We were very pleased with the education our children received. All four school are excellent. I recently checked the scores closely at the Department of Education website for a client. The website can be a bit overwhelming unless one understands the educational lingo. Basically, the difference between scores varies by 1 or 2 points for each school and each test at the different grade levels. Talking to parents can be helpful but be careful. One particular experience, good or bad, can mean a skewed opinion that may not be a true representation of the school or its teachers. The residents of the town are well educated themselves and value education above almost all other town services. You have to take your trash to the Disposal and Recycling Center, no municipal trash pick up. The trade off is a population that consistently votes to fund the schools, with overrides if necessary. A special election this past December, in the midst of horrible economic headlines, resulted in the funding for a new high school. I am including a link to an excellent article. In addition, I will mention that both of my daughters have received excellent education in the public schools and I am proud to say that thanks to Wellesley, my youngest will graduate from Harvard in June.... more
