Where is a good place in Austin to BUY a natural rain collecting barrel?

Asked by Torquil Creevy, Austin, TX Thu May 19, 2011

Don't want plastic. Prefer wine or whiskey barrel already set up for collection. Also are there current rebates or assistance for buying Water collection systems in Austin??

I think this getting a whiskey barrel is an awesome idea! It would be much easier to blend that in with the landscaping. Going green is vogue right now, thank goodness, so I'd ask around and see if any of your neighbors have found anything.

There is a good list of products and suppliers in the Austin area located at http://www.dickpeterson.com and you can find out about rainwater harvesting rebates available through the City of Austin's water conservation site: http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/watercon/rwrebates.htm

Dick Peterson is a great resource. I worked with him at Austin Energy's Green Building Program and he has always been our go-to person for rainwater harvesting.

Best luck,

Hi Torquil,

I agree with Betina's recommendation. They should have the answer to all of your questions.

I just checked your profile. I would never have guessed that you were born in Texas! Hope you're doing well.

Take care,

I would go to Richard in Dripping Springs for a real system. http://WWW.rainwatercollection.com. Why fool around with amateurs when you have a pro so close?! Good luck!

Hi Torquil,

Hope everything is going great. An empty whiskey barrel weighs 125 pounds, there is a company in that will ship one ready to rock and roll to Austin for $375 this is the link: http://www.ne-design.net/oak-whiskey-barrel.html
