It's true there is no state income tax and no sales tax. It's true oil money funds some nice things (like the performing arts center) and it's true citizens get oil dividends in October every year. When I lived there mine ran between $800 and $1500 per family member...and yes, that IS taxable. It's not for everyone (thank God) but it's pretty and the drinking water is fabulous.

Visit Alaska...and you will never leave. It truly is the most amazing state! WE lived on the coast of the Bering Sea for 10 years of our lives...in two different villages...WE now live on the road system(ya know roads that connect you to everyone and everything) and we still love Alaska. There is more to Alaska then cruise ships, glaciers and grizzly bears...there are wild flowers, berries, tundra, crazy huge mountain ranges, skiing, dogmushing, seakayaking...and so much more!!!

Well, I currently live in Alaska. Eventhough the winters are very difficult to handle, the summers tend to make it worth the long winters. Not only is it beautiful, but the people are great as well. I grew up in Texas and got tired of the fake character I tended to find in people, up here....not so much like that. Sure we might not have every restaraunt or store that the "lower 48" has but we are gaining ground fast! I don't know where you are from but one of the most important things about living up here is that our min. wage working at McDonalds is 7.15 an hour. A server gets min. wage plus tips, unlike the other states where you get a %. Average income is much higher and the economy is growing leap and bounds, especially with the new companies coming in the next few years. Its definitely a different lifestyle up here, and the winters are depressing, but if you can live through it, it's a great place to spend your time and raise a family. I suggest to my family still in Texas to come up even for a summer to work and save up money, especially if you can live with a friend or family member for a little while, it's a great way to make some cash to put in savings for the rest of the year. Males that are interested in professionally fishing can get jobs during summer and make 40,000 dollars plus in just 3 months. Several people love living up here because if you are into an active lifestyle such as fishing, camping, hiking, snowboarding, skiing etc it's a paradise both in winter and summer. Hope this answer helps just a little!

I wasn't able to attend my family reunion in Alaska a few years back. But from the photos and videos my family brought back, the reasons to move to Alaska are very plentiful. Everything from beautiful scenery to wonderful locals, they raved about everything and are already planning to return as soon as possible.
