This is actually a dangerous question to pose upon Realtors:
If we answer you either way, (our opinion), we could be guilty of "steering".
If you look at local crime statistics, you will get a better idea of the REPORTED crimes;
this would cover our butts.
A better idea, would be to visit the prospective neighborhood and talk to the residents; find out what its like to live there; the good and bad, the desirable and the disgusting: Do this before you make a committment.

Safety is a huge question for anyone moving to a new place. And people have different opinions.

Several people blog about this, and so have I http://www.trulia.com/blog/pacita_dimacali/filter/category/C…

CrimeReports.com - This is probably one that is recommended most often.

Downtown Oakland is an exciting place to be with the birth of new lofts and condos, restaurants, festivals, etc.

My girlfriend and I recently moved into this zip code at 20th and Market in June, 2012. There are good and bad blocks, but overall we've been very pleasantly surprised with this neighborhood. Our neighbors are terrific and many people work from home on our block. The Victorian homes in the Ralph Bunche neighborhood can be incredible values, and the location is GREAT with easy street parking. Although there isn't a lot of retail business on Market St., Uptown's bars and music venues are within walking distance, as is 19th St. BART. Access to and from SF via West Grand is unbeatable, and Jack London Square, downtown Oakland, Emeryville, Chinatown and Old Oakland are all a quick drive or bike away. We have had no crime trouble beyond littering.
