Itâ€™s a very safe, very nice community with ambiance. By land, the island is reached by a small bridge, leading onto City Island Avenue, which runs the 1.5-mile length of the island. The island is no more than a half-mile wide. Many of the streets end at private beaches. City Island Avenue is the only through street north and south and the route of the city bus that passes about every 30 minutes ( BX29 bus links City Island to the Pelham Bay Park subway station, the last stop on the No. 6. The bus ride takes about 5 minutes, and the subway to and from Midtown is about 50 minutes)and two express buses (BXM7B) from City Island to Manhattan during the morning rush hour, and two that return in the evening. It takes about 50 minutes to reach Midtown; fare is $5. The island is mostly residential, one- or two-story family detached or semidetached homes.
