iniitially because it had to be paid back.now, i'm told i don't! Also, does it have to be applied towards home only? i don't need assistance with down payment for i already bought home at beginning of Dec. last yr.
You should be able to file an amended return with the tax credit. Consult your CPA to do this for you.

If you bought last year, you qualify for the $7,500 Tax Credit that must be paid back.... I believe. Consult a CPA.
It is an interest free loan.... So it may be of some value to you.
Did you prepare your own taxes? Or did you use someone like HR Block? If you used someone, go back to them and sit down and discuss the benefits.
You can amend you taxes, i.e., file them with any deductions you missed.

If you bought your home this year you can get a credit back on your 2008 taxes by filing the correct form. If you bought in Dec. last year that was too early to claim the $8000 of which you don't have to pay back if you live in house for proper time.

Call a qualified accountant to help you with this.
Yes, the $8000 tax credit is for first time home buyers who purchased a home in 2009. The $7500 tax credit for first time home buyers is available for those who purchased in 2008. It is an interest free loan that can be repayed over 15 years through tax withholding or other means.
