Great question. I have a man made pond and love it. We use ours for enjoyment but a lot of ponds in this area are for water rentention and to control flooding.

Many neighborhoods have the water retention issue as a way of controlling flooding or water accumulation in an area. Many of the community ponds are treated with chemicals - hence the GREEN or BLUE color that will cut down on bugs. We used to live in an apartment complex that had a pond, but there were more bugs that came from the woods and standing water than the pond.

If the pond is in a rural area, then it is for aesthetics or fishing, or perhaps even a livestock watering hole. Where there is water, there will be bugs, in Ohio, so beware, unless you treat it, but then you ruin the water supply with contamination from chemicals.

In Central Florida where we have had so much new building, the requirements for water retention call for ponds or lakes that hold water that would other wise potentially flood an area when there are heavy rains. The retention ponds allow for storm water drainage. Most communities will place a fountain in the pond to keep the water from becoming stagnant.
