In our area districts are made up of towns that supply a governing force. Within the towns are villages and Hamlets. It is confusing for many people. The large area the "Town" takes care of local roads, ordinances, planning and zoning.

In New Paltz the Village is the central area people think of as "New Paltz".

It really gets complicated when you take into account the address. Many people that have an address of New Paltz live in the Town of Esopus or the Town of Gardiner. The school districts are another set area.

What does all this mean to you when you are searching for a home? Do you have children that you want to go to a certain school district? Do your search by that school. If you want to be in the Village- do not search the zip code.

I know it all sounds complicated- It sounds like it is time to develop that relationship with a realtor now to help you sort it all out.

The village is the more concentrated area with schools and stores mostly within walking distant and the town is where homes are more spread out with little if any stores etc.
