We're looking for a neighborhood as much as for a home -- that is, the right people, feel, amenities, etc.

An ideal neighborhood would be one with young families and near major highways. Does this exist in Southern Montgomery Country (i.e., Potomac, N. Potomac, Bethesda)? Is there a Kentlands-like neighborhood that doesn't involve the terrible commute from G-burg? Thanks!

Not sure what price range you are looking at, but you may want to consider Hungerford off of Wootton Parkway at W. Edmonston. It is an older neighborhood but family-oriented. The location is excellent--nestled between 270 and Rockville Pike, with easy access to Beltway. It is also walking/Ride-On distance from Rockville Metro and the new Rockville Town Center. Cluster is Richard Montgomery (Newsweek rated RM High School #32 in the nation above Walter Johnson, Whitman, etc.) There are several parks as well. If you can't afford Bethesda or Potomac or Kentlands, Hungerford is a good area to consider. Prices currently between $400K and $500K.

Hi Michael, Having raised my children in North Potomac, I can truthfully say that there are many, many neighborhoods in the closser-in part of N. Potomac that would fit your criteria. It's close to highways, yet there are always alternative routes to get you anywhere you want to go. You just need to know them! and I sure do! I can truthfully say that those were the best 15 years I had in a neighborhood!

I would recommend you look at Kenwood Forest at Bradley Boulevard and Arlington Road in Bethesda/Chevy Chase. It is 395 townhomes surrounded by green space right at the edge of the Crescent Trail, which runs down to Georgetown, and a 5 minute walk to all of Bethesda's restaurants, movies, and shopping. It is filled with a great mix of young families, singles, and empty nesters who want the suburban lifestyle, but don't want to leave an urban setting. Homes run between 1000 sq feet and 2000 sq feet with decks and sometimes basements. Condo fees are low and the maintenance of the community is excellent. You have easy access to DC down Wisconsin and Connecticut Aves and out to Virginia at River Road and the Beltway, 10 minutes away. Check it out!

Hi Michael,

There's three major high-density/mixed-use developments like the Kentlands in Montgomery County -- Kentlands/Lakelands, King Farm (Rockville) and Fallsgrove (Rockville). See link below for a summary of each. You might also want to check out Washingtonian Woods in Gaithersburg which is adjacent to Lakelands.

As for avoiding a terrible commute.... I'm not sure how to help out on that one! Good luck.

Michael, there are many neighborhoods that meets your needs! However, my favorite one would be the Fallsgrove Subdivision. Why? Easy access to HWY, walking distance to shopping center, restaurants, hospital, universities, and more!

Cheers,

Michael,
Potomac isn't generally zoned that way. The Kentlands is truly unique, and is the first of it's kind in Maryland. I hope to see more communities like it. There are some very nice communities in your area, like Avenel.

That's a very subjective criteria. I'm sure nearly everyone thinks their neighborhood fits your description!

Design-wise, there really aren't any neo-traditional neighborhoods "down county". King Farm in Rockville would be the closest to 270 and metro.

If you like older neighborhoods, there are so many its hard to narrow it down, but Garrett Park or AU Park in NW DC might be places to consider.
