Most areas north of I-40 would be best for a farmhouse. I know of several that may fit the bill depending on how much acreage you are looking for. I was in one recently built in 1900 and has great potential with a great view and tons of privacy. I would be happy to email you a list of homes available in Iredell, Alexander, Catawba and other northern counties. Feel free to contact me anytime at 704-450-0588 or email me at sonya@myexithometeam.com.
Harmony, Mocksville, West Iredell and Olin/Union Grove area are the best areas to check for older farmhouses. However, you will probably have to approach individual owners as you will not find much listed on the mls. I have lived here for 17 years in Statesville. I know quite a few people and can put you in touch with some farmers who may be interested in selling off parcels. Building what you want right now is probably going to be less expensive.
Look at a little town called Harmony, it is on Highway 21 just outside of Statesville.
My parents have lived there for the last 17 years and love it. It is a very warm and welcoming community. It is the kind of town that Mayberry was based on, everyone knows everyone and they all look out for each other. There hasn't been a tremendous amount of growth in the area so I am sure that you will find what it is that you are looking for.
Hickory is an excellent area! Check out our website for a TON of resources on Hickory, NC.
Troutman area is an area I would look. If you would like me to help. Just give me a call at 704-607-7514.. I can start looking for you and work by email. Visit me at http://www.carolina-real-estate.com
Look away from the I 40. Go towards Denver/ Sherrills Ford or even towards Wilkesboro/Taylorsville. These are rural areas. The Denver/Sherrills Ford areas are towards Lake Norman so the prices might be higher but the other direction across I-40 would be Wilkesboro/ Taylorsville. You could even go up I-77 towards Harmony. I use to live in the area so sorry for throwing a bunch of names at you but, if you look at a map you will understand what I am saying.
Hope this helps,
