Michael,
I think that it is a WONDERFUL idea. As a long term Realtor in S Central PA (Shippensburg area), I often have families that would like to consider a dual family home for multi generational living. SOmnetimes it is for care of an aging parent, and sometimes for care of a single-parent-child who needs assistance, but desires more independence than just to 'come back home'.
I see it as an increasing market, and THERE ARE JUST NOT ENOUGH OF THOSE HOMES AVAILABLE!
Now, is it economically feasible or the best choice??
THere are a number of things that need consideration when you are planning such an addition.
1) are there limiting zoning or building codes that need to be addresses.--talk to your township or boro zoning officer/person.
2) Will it out price your home to your neighborhood?--if you are already at the top end of your neighborhood, you may have difficulty recouping the cost.
3) Does it make sense for your family situatoin?? THis is perhaps the largest factor in reality. How long term of a need to you perceive it to be? WIll it work for the next geneeration?4) How will you finance it? Do the parents have funds to help with the build? Will you have to refinance to make the payments and cna you afford it?
4) take into account not just YOUR current need but future needs, your family's changing care levels aAND resale. My advice would be to ALWAYS plan for a 1st level bedroom and bath--handicapped accessible.
Blessings to you as you move forward wisely.
Hope that helps, and thanks for a great question.
