jenn.catheyr…, Renter in Mercer Island, WA

Relocating to Seattle area and need advice on areas in which to rent a house with good schools and not to long a commute for downtown Seattle.

Asked by jenn.catheyroberts, Mercer Island, WA Sat Sep 1, 2012

With 2 boys, schools are the #1 priority, My 2nd grader has high-functioning autism and is currently in a great program in LAUSD, would love something similar. Looking at Mercer Island, but wondering about Bellevue or Issaquah. Our temporary housing may be in Bellevue/Lakemont which is Issaquah schools near Cougar mountain? I can't find much about Special Ed/autism programsin those schools. Any advice would be appreciated :)

I have a good friend with a son who also has high-functioning autism. She did a ton of research on which schools would be best for him, and ended up moving to Snoqualmie for their excellent programs that cater specifically to her son. The school district is great and their program for autism has helped her and her son immensely.

It is further from downtown, so that's something to keep in mind but for her it's absolutely been worth it. Bellevue schools are also fantastic and get some of the highest ratings, so if Snoqualmie is too far for you, that's where I'd be looking next.

There is a lot of good answers here with quality links and information for you to sort thru. I live in Whispering Heights which is sandwiched between Lakemont(Issaquah) and Somerset(Bellevue). I fall into Bellevue Schools (yay)! This year Eastgate Elementary (Bellevue) has a new program that has high-functioning autism students integrated into the general classrooms. My 2nd grade son has his good friend sitting right next to him that has HFA, and a teacher with experience with it as well. You probably won't find much info on the district website or schools website, but feel free to contact them directly: Principal: Gail McDonald, Office Manager: Jessica Soto Tel: 425-456-5100.
Being near the I-90 corridor is key to getting to downtown with a minimal commute. My Windermere office is just down the hill from this area and just off of I-90. I would recommend directly contacting anyone of the Real Estate Professionals that answered your question.

Along the I90 corridor, Bellevue, Issaquah, Mercer Island schools. Best to call each of those districts and see what special programs they might have that match your needs. Please be aware, one of my listings was listed as a rental here by a scammer trying to get people to pay him a deposit. Please work with a reputable agent and do not pay any depsoit for a deal that it way too good to be true. It probably is.

Hello, and congratulations that you are moving to the Puget Sound area!
To answer your question: Bellevue Schools is one of the best school districts in the nation. That said, I believe they have different programs and service schools designed to meet specific special needs.

Here is the link to their webpage.
http://www.bsd405.org/about-us/departments/student-services/…

On the right sidebar there are information links for autism... here is a link for a copy of that list:

The dividing line between Issaquah and Bellevue School districts in the Lakemont-Cougar Mtn area puts some homes in one district and some in the other. For example, currently there are 6 homes listed in the Cougar Mtn area of which 5 are Issaquah Schools and one is Bellevue Schools. Most homes in Lakemont are in the Issaquah School District. The Issaquah School District also has an excellent reputation.

Email me if I can be of further help. I am sure that you will discover some excellent resources from the link above to assist you with specific questions. Thanks!
