The east side of the Lake Norman area consists of Huntersville, Cornelius, and Davidson. This area is good for recreation, as well as education. Your daughter will enjoy the new Discovery Place in Huntersville. There are many parks for families to enjoy- Latta Plantation Park, Jetton Park, Blythe Landing, etc. The owner of the Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Shop on Main St. in Davidson, Karen Toney, sends out a weekly email with the local events in Davidson. You could get on her email list by stopping by her store or email me to get it. For lunch or dinner, it is hard to beat 131 Main Restaurant in Cornelius. If you want to look out on boats while you eat, then go to the Rusty Rudder. For a great outdoor shopping village, I suggest Birkdale Village.
There are plenty of alternate highways to I-77 into Charlotte- Hwy 21, Hwy 115, or Hwy 16 and the back roads. Commuting is not as much of a problem if you learn the alternate routes to your destination. There is also a park and ride station in Huntersville off exit 23.
As for family friendly neighborhoods, there are too many to list. Here are a few that my clients have chosen: Macaulay, Birkdale, Birkdale Village, Wynfield, The Hamptons, Latta Springs, Cambridge Grove, Hampton Ridge, Heron Harbor, Blue Stone Harbor, Monteith Park, Stephens Grove, Cedarfield. In Huntersille, the average price is $200,000 to $400,000. Your choice will depend on floor plan and decor too. You might also want to check out the Highland Creek and Mallard Creek areas of the University area. Nearby Cabarrus county has some outstanding family friendly neighborhoods.
Regarding schools, I encourage my clients to visit the school and meet the staff. Barnette Elementary School does not have any mobile classrooms. Torrence Chapel Elementary has quite a few mobile classrooms. Davidson Elementary is in a quaint setting and has always enjoyed a good reputation. Cornelius Elementary School has a good vib, is located across the street from the public library, but is an older building. For websites, many good ones have already been mentioned: http://www.greatschools.org or http://www.ncreportcards.org or the Charlotte Mecklenburg School website. Some of the parents that I know speak highly of the CMS school of the arts. In addition to public schools, there is a variety of private schools here that are stellar. Get a copy of a Charlotte Parent Magazine to educate you about family matters- free in many grocery stores. Go by the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce to get free maps and information.

I see you have received plenty of great information on your move.
I live in the City and am a native Charlottean. I lived in Lake Norman Area (Mooresville and Davidson) for 10 years before moving back.
A 30 minute commute from the Lake Norman area is possible, but not during peak driving times. Figure on more like 45 minutes to an hour without any traffic delays.
Good luck in your move, we have many, many happy relocated families here, I think you'll enjoy it!

I personally live in Concord, which is just outside of Charlotte. I've only been here for a few months but I like it so far. I'm not sure about the school systems up here, though.
Good luck with your move!
We look forward to having you as a new resident here in the Lake Norman area! I personally live in Davidson and my office is located in Cornelius. I am also currently working with two other families who are relocating to the area and I have helped many others find their new home here as well. As I both live and work in the area I know it well and it is home to me. I would be very happy to help you in the search for your new home. Please contact me so that I can give you more information that would be specific to your needs and wants.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Welcome to Charlotte (soon!). I'd love to help you find your home when you move here. I grew up in that area and in the CMS school system. Contact me with specific questions and I'd be happy to help!
I live in Huntersville and my office is in Cornelius. I'd welcome the opportunity to assist you. Also, let me know if you'd like a relocation packet sent to you and I'll send one.
Sincerely,
Bill Ahls http://www.LakeNormanBill.com
Selecting a location is one of the most difficult things newcomers face because of the size of region. Charlotte is in Mecklenburg County - which is an 850 square mile area, and there are 11 surrounding counties. So, the job/business location will probably limit/focus your choices significantly. What sometimes helps narrow the decision is schools. In the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area, of which Huntersville is a part, school districts are very large and many buyers are researching specific schools closely and giving me direction to search in specific high school attendance zones. Taxes are low here compared to many other parts of the country.
Here is a local publication's school comments and ranking.

The State of North Carolina also maintains a great data rich report card site. Each year, schools in North Carolina may receive several designations based on their performance on the state's ABCs tests as follows:
Honor School of Excellence:
School of Excellence:
School of Distinction:
School of Progress:
High Growth:
Most Improved Schools:
http://www.ncreportcards.org/src/advSearchMoreInfo.jsp?iId=106
You can search for schools with these designations, which are awarded on the basis of the percentage of students performing at grade level and on whether the school attained the ABCs growth standards.
In our market area, we have:
five of the top ten scoring NC elementary schools
six of the top ten scoring NC middle schools, and
two of the top ten scoring NC high schools.

The Huntersville area offers many very nice neighborhoods and planned communities ranging from elaborate turn of the century homes to modern construction recently built. A number of these planned communities appeal to those for whom a country club and/or golf setting is familiar or desirable. there is very good availability of newer high quality homes throughout the region. If you want to maintain a water oriented lifestyle, you will probably be considering Lake Norman, http://www.visitlakenorman.org.
We'd be pleased to serve as your real estate professionals. If you have a full time agent with a Masters degree in Planning with Finance and over two decades of experience, working for you, you will likely do better in negotiations. I'd be pleased to provide that service. ...and if you like this reply, please give it a "thumbs up" or "best answer".
The schools are very good at all levels. For ewxample we just opened a new high school.
Please go to our web site http://www.luxurylakenormanhomes.com to not only easily search for homes but also click on the Facebook tab to see the great lifestyle you can enjoy living in this area. My wife is just leaving the house to go to the farmers mkt in Davidson as I write this e-mail.

I77 is a convenient commute from that area into the city. But, it is also an incredibly popular commute and traffic can become quite congested during rush hour.
If you want to look at any homes during your trip I would be happy to arrange that for you. Working as your buyers agent is no cost to you and you can check out this portion of our website to see more about how we could help you with that. buy.group15realestate.com

If schools are a factor in deciding where to live, you may want to check out the school report cards for a snap shot of how schools are performing in the area, http://www.ncreportcards.org/src/. Meckleburg, Cabarrus County and Iredell County schools are in the areas you have been searching online. I would be happy to assist you further. Please feel free to call or email.

There are a lot of areas that will work for you if you are looking to commute. Charlotte is a large city and growing daily. Fortunately as we grow as a city; roadways and infrastructure are being improved.
To answer your questions you can commute into uptown Charlotte realtively easily from the Huntersville area up to Davidson. Of course the farther up you go the longer the commute will be. Another option for you would be south and southeast Charlotte. That area offers comparable lifestyle to the Huntersville area.
in regards to schools; Charlotte schools system is the largest school system in the state of North Carolina. We also have some of the highest rated schools in the country. A couple great websites to look at for schools are http://www.greatschools.org and ncreportcard.org. both will provide you with independent information about how the school does academically and reviews from parents who have or had children attending those schools.
In regards of looking at homes at the end of August. I would recommend talking with a Realtor in the area and schedule some time to go out and look at homes, have him drive you through the areas you would need to commute and show you what is imprtant for you and your family......
You may be a little ways out but a good Realtor will be able to furnish you with information more easily and direct you to variou swebsites for unbiased information as well..
Thanks,
Andrew Graham
