Neighborhood Advice

Asked by lshannon, San Antonio, TX Thu Aug 23, 2012

We will be moving to San Antonio next summer and would like to buy. We'd like to begin narrowing our search now so we don't waste too much time just looking at neighborhoods when we go down to househunt. The tricky thing is that my husband will be alternating between Lackland AFB and Brooke Army Medical Center, and really needs to be within 30 min of both places. Our top priority is an excellent elementary school, ideally in a safe, family friendly neighborhood. Alamo Heights seems to fit, but I don't think we can get what we're looking for in our price range there. We'd like a 4/2 under $250,000, preferably 1900 sq ft or more.

I think it's your best bet would be North Central in the 281/Bitters to Thousand Oaks area. Nice homes in that area are about 40 percent less than they are in the Alamo Heights district.

Area 1400 offer homes in your price range, family neighborhoods, large parks, shopping and some of the best San Antonio schools inside Loop 1604. (Bradley Middle School on Brookhollow is consistently ranked San Antonio's best middle school inside Loop 1604.

If I had a friend moving here in your situation that is the first place I show take them. While it is not "close" to either base, it is near the hub of all the Interstates and you can get anywher ein town in less than 30 minutes

Hi Lshannon,

It does sound like you are going to have a tricky issue being in the middle of Lackland and SAMMC (BAMC) :). Alamo Heights is a great area, but doesn't really put you in the middle of both areas and you are right, finding a home in your price range there, may be a tad rough :).

Some good areas of San Antonio you may want to check out as far as good schools would be the NE area of San Antonio TX or you may want to check out Cibolo TX or Schertz TX, (both are in the Greater San Antonio TX area). San Antonio TX is quite large. Lackland falls more in the South side of San Antonio however, many people who work at Lackland live in the North Side school district.

You do have your work cut out for you. My website will be available to you and has a terrific home search if you just want to register and get started on looking for homes to see what you like. A year out is a bit long in the tooth to nail anything down, but you can save favorites and keep a watch on any homes you may like. Additionally, I have some new construction searches set up for each of those areas I mentioned above so you can keep a look at that.

Some other things you may want to consider are what type of financing are you going to get. Are you military? If so, you can use your VA loan. You may want to start considering that about 6 months before you get here. I know some terrific lenders to help you in that area.

There are a ton of good neighborhoods in and around San Antonio TX. I would love to help you out if you would like. Just give me a call or send an e-mail if you would like my help :). Other than that, I think you will come to love it here in San Antonio when you get here :)!

Easy as pie! I'll be more than happy to start sending you some homes to check out... They will all be long gone by next summer, but at least it will give you an idea of what is out there in your price range and area.

Just for fun, here are some homes for you to take a quick look at that may work for you:

Shoot me an e-mail or a text, or give me a call and I will set you up on an updating search so you can follow the homes that come up between now and then, so we can keep you updated on the homes for sale that fit the area and price range you are looking for.

I can also get you the VERY BEST Financing in the whole state of Texas! I have the best VA and Texas Vet program you will ever find!
