have never moved more than 10 miles away from my hometown. We have a 1 yr old and a 3 yr old and if we are going to move I want to do it before they get in school. I have no clue how to go about moving and making arrangements any ideas would help. Oh yea we would be moving in with out friends so housing is not an issue. We both would need to get jobs down there and what not.
Winter Park is a big neighborhood and it has many good areas perhaps the person below doesn't live in the good area. Orlando has more crime than DeLand because Orlando is a tourist town and theives tend to target tourists. DeLand has many college professors and we have an agent in our office that can attest to DeLand's schools-her kids got scholarships and are going to Stetson now. We don't selll houses we show houses and you buy the one you want--real estate agents are facilators.
We make it less stressful for you. Let's get together and I'll show you the area and you can decide for yourself.

I hope you have changed your mind about moving to Florida with a 1 and 3 year old. Seminole County is the only county with decent schools (low crime - halfway intelligent admin staff) but the school system in the entire state is a wreck. I moved to Central Florida (Winter Park) in 1976 at hte age of twelve and have seen the area decline. Poor court systems, state senate and laws contribute to the high crime all over the state (criminals and the weirdest types of crime occur down here). I have two children one about to enter HS and one pre-school age. I stay home with my youngest. Looking to get out of this horrible, joke of a state before he enters kindergarten. PS...don't believe anything real estate agents tell you. You stated that you already had living arrangements in order and they are still trying to sell you something. Good luck and check out Montana and NC/SC before you move here.
Let me show you what the area has to offer. Let me know when you will be here and I can start sending you some options and community info by mail or e-mail. Good luck, it is nice in Florida, you should like it. Northern and Central still has seasons.

Just wondering if you ended up moving to Deland. We are also from New York and have a house in Deland. Our younger son goes to Stetson. We love it ....such a cute little city. There actually is a lot to do also because it is so cenrally located. He is graduating in May and are considering selling the house so if you have any friends looking for a 7 year old house. It has been very good to us. Take care, Gaby

Hi,
DeLand is a wonderful city. It 's still smal enough to be frendly and it's not overly built out or congested. However, most good jobs are in or near Orlando, depending on your field. The commute is not bad at all. (37 miles to downtown Orlando) and of course there are many job opportunities in Orlando suburbs which are not even that far of a commute. Equally closeby is Daytona Beach. We moved here five years ago and absolutely love it. As far as housing, you get a lot of bang for your buck compared to Orlando prices, yet Orlando area attractions , jobs and shopping are still close. and the beach is a half hour a way as well. Deland also boasts close proximity to the St. john's river, wihch is another added plus, along with the Ocala national Forest within a half hour drive. I think Deland is one of the best kept secrets of Florida. You will not be disappointed. There are good schools, public as well as private. And, like I said, DeLand is in close proximity to everywhere. It's just a great little city with a lot of history and pride, not to mention it's a university town as well.
Amy, it sounds like this will be a huge step in your life. I recommend you do your research on everything from employment to schools for children. Florida is a beauiful place to live and Deland is a growing community. Make a check list of need to know things and get your questions anwered. Moving your personal things is the easy part, but your heart has to be in it. Deland is in Volusia county, my company services that area as well as Seminole and Orange county. I have alot of information on my web site, feel free to browse it of call me with any questions.
Good luck
Pam
There are a few things you should seriously consider. 1. The job market. (You should definitely have a career or job in line long before you come to this area. This is definitely not NY and you will be shocked at the wages in this area. The cost of living is not low either), 2. Schools (Volusia county is having a terrible time managing the school budget and is planning on closing quite a few schools in the county.), 3. Friends you are moving in with (People are different when you live with them....please please be careful, especially for your children).
If you go to my website at http://www.PearlStoescu.com I have a great resource page that you will get a lot of use out of. Not knowing more personal things its hard to advise. Call anytime!
