My family and I are making the move to NC. We've been searching for homes to buy (this is an excellent site).

However, we cannot buy site unseen. Therefore, we need to rent first. Herein lies the dilemna, we need to rent in the school area of which we will be buying eventually....don't want to move kids after first year of school in NC. We have 3rd grader and 7th grader...want them to go to East Chapel Hill School eventually. Any suggestions on short term rentals within schooling area?

Many houses in the Chapel Hill area are rented by property management companies; you can find a list at http://www.allpropertymanagement.com/search/north-carolina/c…

To search many of their listings directly you can look on http://www.chapelhillrent.com/.

Craigslist is great for rentals by the owner; and you can do a rent search on Realtor.com on a company website for those listed with realtors.

When we moved here we were in the same situation. We wanted the new McDougle middle school for our daughter entering 7th so that limited the areas in Chapel Hill. Our son was in 1st grade--we moved him during the year to the new school and he adjusted. After moving so many times when I was a kid, I vowed I wouldn't move my kids so often. Didn't work out that way, they ended up moving many times though some continuity definitely helps. If your long term goal is East Chapel Hill High, then look in the areas that have schools that feed into ECCH.

Our solution was to rent a house in the McDougle school district for a year. We found the house we wanted to buy after only a few months, so then sublet the house for the remainder of the lease. It cost us more money in the short term but we got what we want for the long term.

Consider this option because I think you'll find it easier to integrate into the community if you are here in a "settled" way, and it'll be better for the kids. I agree that you shouldn't buy a house sight unseen since you need to consider the most important aspects of a home for your family and the way you live.

For rentals, I would check Craig's List and home rental sites. There are property managers that handle rentals only, especially houses. One is Louise Beck Properties. Others I've found online. There are also home sellers who would consider renting their home for a year.

Shaka,

Short term rentals six months or less are typically hard to come by. I'd be happy to make inquiries on your behalf if you provide me with more details. I don't think there will be much if anything in MLS, but agents sometimes have clients with vacant homes that they will rent for a short term while they are on the market. As another agent has suggested, Craigslist is a very good place to look. Please contact me through my webpage if you'd like further info.

Hi Shaka
If you provide me details I will be happy to assist with short term rentals in the area. Have you considered coming for a short visit to look at the area and whats available or would you like me to send you homes for purchase in the school zone you seek? If you provide wants/needs price etc i would be happy to email homes to you. You have made a great choice and will love the Triangle area.
Michael
