I am buying a home in Freehold borough, but I heard a lot of bad rumors about the area. Drugs, gangs, just to name a few. Is it really that bad in Freehold?

Dannielle, Very good and interesting answer. I believe you reported accurately in what you read, but I have seen the numbers the other way with the borough outranking he township high school. Off the top of my head, I do not recall where I read that. Either way, Freehold Regional is a good district.

While we are talking about some of the other great things in the borough, I have to mention a few others. The borough has a really nice historic charm to it. To compliment the restaurants, we also have tons of quality entertainment and activities through out the year. It is really nice to walk a few blocks to see a nice Jazz concert or any number of other things that go on.

Also, I am a strong believer that for ourn tax dollars, we get some of the best municipal services in Monmouth County. Our taxes are moderate comparedd to similar towns, but we see what we get and it is good.

I thought I was done in this thread, but I dug up some god reading on the schools. From the web site I run, here is a nice blurb.....

Other Monmouth and Ocean County schools named in the silver and bronze categories — among the top 504 in the nation — were the Academy of Allied Health and Science in Neptune, Freehold Borough High School..........Freehold High School was the only traditional public school in Monmouth and Ocean counties to receive the recognition.

For more good reading, with several news paper artles posted, go to http://freeholdvoice.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=regional&…

Hi Pauline, as you can see from the responses, opinions on a community are just that - my recommendation is do your own homework/due diligence. The Star Ledger School Report Card is a great resource to compare/contrast school districts:

http://www.nj.com/news/reportcard/

Regarding issues of crime, here too, do your own research including a call/visit to the police department to ask these questions.

Good luck to you in your search/purchase.

According to NJ Monthly, the Freehold Borough High School was rated at 129 out of 316 NJ High Schools. Freehold Township was rated 122 out of 316. As stated by Brian below, the residents of Freehold Borough are really trying to make the school district better, and it seems they are succeeding. Freehold borough also has many benefits. It is convenient to transportation to the city, close to all major highways, shopping is all around you, great restaurants, and it is affordable. You just need someone to show you around. I'd be more than happy to help you with that!

I live in Freehold Borough and have been there for 15 years. Here is the web site I run about the town. http://www.freeholdvoice.com That will bring you to the main pages. On the front page there is a link to the message board where you will find tons of information about the town. It is an open site dedicated to open and honest discussion. If you decide to participate on the site, we can answer many questions for you.

The town does have ups and downs. You will find the people who live there do have genuine concerns, but overall love the town. The people of the town are great to get to know. It is a very nice community with down to earth people. I saw mention of the schools. The borough high school is very highly ranked, even better than the township which is also very good.

Give the town a chance, it is a great place to be. yes, it does have a rep, but much of that is very undeserved.

Freehold borough is a very small town. In fact, it is only one square mile. There are some really good streets and some really bad ones. What you need to know are where the areas of higher crime are. The school is not rated as high as the Freehold Township schools, so in the case of resale, it is always better to look in the town with the better school district. I actually work in Freehold Borough, so if you have any other questions, please feel free to call!

Freehold Township and Freehold B. are different. While I can't tell you everything, I can recommend you to look at the FBI's UCR report and you can compare the differences.

I don't know the area well enough to advise. But here is some info for you:

Personally I wouldn't buy there. I'm not saying that it is a bad place to live. I'm saying that I wouldn't BUY there.
