I'm disappointed in finding the reference from Alex that the test was some international deal. I always understood it to have come from a poll of the mail carriers in response to the question of "how many days of the year do you wear shorts" and Redwood City won hands down.
Suffice it to say that Redwood City's slogan is "Climate Best by Government Test." See web reference for the origin of the slogan.
I like it, but to each his own. I used to live in Foster City and I felt for me this was some of the best weather in the Bay area. I rarely used heat or AC. I like Pacifica, but lots of fog there. I worked downtown and it was often cold there for me. Other areas further south and around East Bay can be much warmer. You might check out http://ggweather.com/climate/ for more detailed info.
It is just about perfect for the Bay Area. Not to hot or to cold. Redwood Shores get a nice breeze and has that Peninsula weather.
Bob is absolutely right. Rewood City is the warmest and the sunniest place on the Peninsula. At the same time it is Peninsula and not "in-land", so it is very comfortable. Occasionally on a warm side. To give you an idea how temperature changes if you travel North from Redwood City on a sunny day in summer with no fog I will give you a small "chart", base on my personal experience and measurements. Let assume that it is 100 degree day in Redewood City:
Redwood City - 100 degrees
Burlingame - 85
Daly City - 72
Golden Gate Bridge - 60 (yes - no fog!)
Marin - 85
Sonoma 108.
The distance from Redwood City to Sonoma is 70 miles. If you go further South to Palo Alto - temperature goes slight down in Palo Alto and even more in Santa Clara.
It's great, not too warm not too cold. They have just revitalized their downtown as well with great new shops, restaurants and a new movie theatre and a town square where they hold concerts and movies and other events.
Beautiful. Some of the best weather in the United States. South of the fog and marine layer of San Francisco, north of the high summer temperatures of the Valley, located just east of the hills bordering the Pacific Ocean. You would be hard pressed to beat it.
