Does anyone know the minimun requirement for a driveway in a residential neighborhood on Oahu. Is a gravel driveway sufficient.?

Asked by Cindy Siok, Kailua, HI Thu Jun 16, 2011

I'm having an issue because a VA inspector felt that gravel was not sufficient and I cannot find anything in the Land Use Ordinance to find out the minimum requirements for a driveway.

If an inspector said it wasn't okay, you're probably not going to get a better opinion. You could talk to a different inspector or some kind of professional in the field if possible. I think that's going to be your best bet at getting this kind of thing figured out. I hope you can figure out a way to have a driveway that you'll enjoy.

Hello Cindy,

Is this a Single Family Home? Are you on the Buyer or the Seller's side? VA Inspectors can be very particular when it comes to their perception of the requirements for the loans. It may not be a requirement per zoning or government regulations, but could be a requirement for the funding of any loan from them. If you are the Seller there may still be Buyer's for your property that could fund via some other means. If you are the Buyer, you are at the mercy of what the VA requires (you may want to have you Buyer try funding with a USDA loan).

Hi Cindy,

What is the VA Inspector using as their standard for that driveway? I would ask to see it in writing.
Also, call a few lenders and ask them for their VA appraisers' phone numbers. Make a few calls to verify that info.
