You may also want to consider a townhouse, feels/lives like a single family without the exterior maintenance headache, i.e. shoveling snow, raking leaves, landscaping, etc....
At your price points there are some really great neighborhoods all close to Rush.
Get Preapproved by a Lender and then start working with a Realtor. Should you need any assistance, feel free to contact me.

Please contact me for a consultation. Streeterville is a great area. Tri-Taylor right near Rush has nice property, townhome or condo, great restaurants, close to everything, won't require a 650k investment, and is right near your job.
West Loop gives you access to the growing restaurant row and wonderful places to relax during off time and meet friends.
South loop, close to everything, but quiet (for Downtown Chicago). Big dogs are welcomed and you get more bang for your buck.
There is a wonderful townhouse complex on Flournoy that would be so close you could walk to work.
Walk through these areas and eat lunch or dinner in an outdoor place to get a feel for the neighborhood.
If you want wonderful representation email me firstname.lastname@example.org with more specific requirements and wants and needs.
Congratulations! At that price point you have a number of options. Streeterville may be an option for a condo.
