Hurricanes have been a part of the Florida environment since....well...FOREVER.
The oldest city in the USA, St Augustine FL is still there. Some homes there were built before 1990...and there they stand... Defiantly.... Triumphantly!
According to the weather channel, some hurricanes have a 250 mile diameter! A hurricane of this size does not only effect Florida but ALL of the south east USA. And if you recall, SANDY was just a little tropical storm that stirred the water in Florida but whacked New York and New Jersey, terribly. Can the question be asked if New York or New Jersey are prone to .... 'Sandys?"
The reality is, everyplace has its stuff.
Alaska has cold and bears, fanatics, fisherman and felons.
Colorado has avalanches and falls from mountain tops an altitude sickness.
California offers annual Sierra Club fires.
New York has more cases of West Nile than Florida, plus high taxes and no 32 oz drinks in some locations.
Arizona has 'dry' heat and lurking rattle snakes
Everyplace has its stuff.
Everyplace brings stuff to the table also. If you want sunshine, white sand beaches, and a natural quality of life that is not extreme oriented...Florida has some stuff to offer.
The choice is always yours.
There are more folks coming into Florida than are leaving. They could be coming for the manatees, but one may realize that Florida real estate is a great value in both local and global market terms.
Since the Myans didn't get me, I'll buy another bottle of Category 5 sangria and wait for the 'Big One."
Best of success to you,

Like anywhere, prepared residents have a hurricane kit ready every season with food and water for a few days for every resident of their home (including pets), waterproof container for valuables and paperwork, and will gas up their vehicles just in case of a power outage afterwards.
At least here in Florida we can see them coming and prepare mentally and physically.
Are you doing any research of your own regarding hurricane force winds, previous history of damages in direct or indirect hits of dmaging winds, not necessary hurricanes, flood damage, insuance costs and codes, building codes, recommendations.
If you not prepared before a Hurricane and or dont know what to do, I am not suggesting to move to South Florida. Same applies to crime, and jobs.
Local job market vary, based on the job seekers' profession.....

When you start looking for a home take all of this into consideration. Work with a reputable Realtor who will guide you through the process and educate you along the way. You also have the right to have the home inspected before purchasing, so you will be able to learn about how the home was constructed.
