Advice on studying for Sales Agent's license and then finding a job.....

Seth Ball

So I purchased the materials from First Tuesday so I can study for my realtor's license. There's obviously a lot of information to cover but I'm wondering if anyone has some advice regarding what sorts of things I should REALLY study in depth. With that said, I'm NOT looking for shortcuts. I just know that in any business there are always aspects that require more knowledge and attention to detail.....

Secondly, will obtaining my license help me in potentially find a job working as a broker's assistant? I know that as a means of getting into real estate and learning the business, my best option is to work in an office and actually immerse myself in the business. Aside from obtaining my license, what more can/should I do to increase my chances of actually being hired and letting people know I'm serious about this as a career?
Any advice is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Seth, Good luck on the whole process. I do agree that if you are going to go forward with getting your license, the cram weekends, where they go over the tests are most helpful. Believe it or not, there are questions on the RE exam that aren't really there to test your knowledge, as much as to trip you up. The "weekend cram" instructors will tell you- this answer makes no sense, but when you see this question, answer such and such...... go figure!

I will caution you, however, there are MANY people in the real estate field - including title officers, escrow officers, mortgage people, etc. who are currently out of work. Many of them have real estate licenses. All of them are looking for placement. The available bodies are many right now, the jobs are few. I would caution you not to burn your bridges until you know you have a job, or can support yourself for quite a while without pay. Not to be a downer, but I have seen many in the past 2 years who thought they were going to "break into the market" and end up in financial ruin!

The best to you!

Seth,

One of the things you'll come to understand about the licensure process is that passing the state test only gives you the right of passage. It is at this point that one begins the long journey of becoming a real estate professional.

The license process is one that is loaded with law and legal issues that are intended to provide you with an accurate knowlege base to build upon and keep you out of trouble.

Our advice is to remain involved with thei Trulia forum where in the trenches and up to date real estate issues are tossed around on a daily basis. There is so much to learn from being here, so much to be reinforced, and so much to be processed. .......This is a unique opportunity for experienced professionals to provide you with what you are looking for.

Good luck

Hi Seth,

Best of luck to you in your new endeavor. Real estate can be a very rewarding field. I really don't recall how the test was broken down so I cannot shed any light on which areas to focus your studies on. I personally found taking the practice exams EXTREMELY helpful. The sales person exam has 150 multiple choice questions and you will have 3 hours and 15 minutes to complete the exam. You will also need to complete the Real Estate Principles and Real Estate Practice courses before taking the exam.

Once you have obtained your license, designations are also a great way to tell potential employers as well as your clients that you are career minded and can add value fas a result of the education you have taken the initiative to pursue.

I would also say that obtaining your license will help you in finding a job working as a broker's assistant. I know that when our office was looking for an assistant the applicant with their license ended up with the job.

All the best,
April
