FIRST ANSWER

Check your local large newspaper. There's often a requirement of public notice. That's usually accomplished by publishing notices of default in the newspaper serving the area.

The same information is available at your local courthouse. And often there are independent services that collect and resell that information. (There are a lot of threads on Trulia about Realty Trac, pro and con. I use a private service that costs $10 a month.)

Title companies also have that information. Any short sales listed on the MLS can be accessed by Realtors. And all REOs (or virtually all) eventually are listed; a Realtor can help you with those, too.
