If you do not know who the "legal" owner of the property is. This is the only sure way to provide proof of payment. Go to the county's Clerk of Court and tell them you do not know who is intitled to the rent payment. They will set up an account and give you a receipt, they will send it to the legal owner. Under no circumstance should you give anyone any funds in cash. If they are entitled to the money, they can get it from the clerk of courts.
