Thoughts on Discovery Bay California

We are in the process of trying to chose a community to relocate to in CA that will best suite our family. Discovery Bay area looks beautiful and the homes are more in our price range for the space we need with the 3 kids and one coming. However it looks to be quite a commute to my husbands new job in Palo Alto. Any thoughts on the area? We liked the Dublin area as well, but can get more for our money in Discovery Bay. How realistic is it for him to drive to Dublin and take the BART to Palo? Would it save him time?

I've lived in Discovery Bay for 11 years, am am now raising my 2 boys here, ages 1 and 4. It's a fabulous place to raise a family. Easpecially if you're active on the water! Waterfront and golf course homes provide the best neighborhoods to live in, and there looks like there's a lot of great deals to be had on both.

We recruited our in-laws to move here 3 years ago from South San Jose. They take the train now from Livermore. It's worth it!

I own a Deep Water Dock House in Discovery Bay that my family enjoy mostly during the summer and our primary residence is in Dublin. As a Real Estate Broker, Investor and Family Man, I can honestly and confidently say that both are FANTASTIC, however, a commute to Palo Alto is extremely difficult from Disco. Dublin is already a haul but the community is worth the drive. I understand that getting more square footage for your money in outer areas of the Bay but your INVESTMENT will certainly give GREATER RETURNS in Dublin, San Ramon, Pleasanton. With Foreclosure at an all time high, you can get yourself a great property, in a great community, at a great price!

Forget Discovery Bay. You should join us in Mountain House. A great growing town with a real sense of community. Great for families! Check out mhvillages.com. MANY of the families here commute to the Silicon Valley, either driving or using ACE train out of Tracy. Give us a look.

Honestly, the drive sucks! I grew up in Discovery Bay when I was a child and absolutely loved it! However, I was into water sports as well.

Disco is a great area but be careful looking for homes in the Lakes and Lakeshore. Those communities have been hit hard with foreclosures and personally, I am not a big fan of those communities. If you like the water, I would suggest finding someting on deep water within the actual walls of Disco.

Either way, I think you would like both areas. Dublin/Pleasanton is a very nice area, one that I would definitely feel comfortable raising my family. I don't sell real estate locally per say, but I have lived in Disco since 1994 and really liked the area.

If you have any other questions let me know!

Discovery Bay is a wonderful place to live an raise a family! Small town feel yet not too far from the major areas.

In terms of commuting many people do commute to the Bay Area daily. The problem is that if he works in Palo Alto, you cannot get there by BART. BART only goes as far south as Millbrae. From there he would have to get on SamTrans to Palo Alto.

I have a friend and client who traveled to Palo Alto for work. She says that if you leave not later then 5:30 it takes about 1 hour 20 minutes door to door. You also need to leave Palo Alto not later than about 2pm not to get caught in the Dublin traffic on 580 coming east.

Car Pooling could help as well as telecommuing a couple of days a week. Most people find the trade off of home prices, community and waking up in Discovery Bay on your off days to be ample compensation for the longer commute.

Check out DiscoveryBayGuide.com for great information and resources. If you want more info regarding the commute I can put you in touch with my friend. Just drop an email through DiscoveryBayGuide.com.
