While the university provides a strong cultural and educational atmosphere, the Research Triangle Park is a short drive away for our residents: http://www.rtp.org
The Chapel Hill/Carrboro schools are nationally recognized for excellence: http://www2.chccs.k12.nc.us/education
My clients who have relocated from the northeast and midwest are extremely pleased...especially with the weather right now!
Good luck in making this important decision!

I'm relocating to the Chapel Hill area with my children too. I have many of the same questions that you did last month and I'm also very interested in an area offering diversity and a forward thinking population. I wonder if you would please share what you've learned with me? Thanks!
I relocated to the triangle from Pittsburgh six years ago so I understand the challenges you are considering. As realtors we can not discuss the ethnic, religious or racial compositions of our communities. However, I would like to offer my website, "resources" section. There, you will find some web links that will help you learn about the demographics, cost of living and schools in our area.
Although Chapel Hill is a college centric community, I think you will find there is a strong sense of community, support for the arts and a great place to raise a family with quality education and exceptional healthcare. The thing you are really going to love, speaking from one northerner to another, is the weather. One winter and you will be cured of any longing for your roots in the north. You might also want to consider Raleigh, Durham and Cary in your search but Charrboro is the most liberal with Chapel Hill following. Good luck.
Art galleries, probably more in Orange County which includes Chapel Hill/Carrboro and Hillsborough. Just the fact that Orange and Chatham counties have an annual Open Studio Tour says it all about art. Theater is excellent at Playmakers at UNC. Durham has DPAC. Music is everywhere depending on what you like.
As everyone has already said, we love living here and can easily promote the area.
I think the previous answers have sufficiently represented the great communities of Chapel Hill and Carrboro. If you are interested in investigating some other communities nearby as well, I'd suggest that you consider Hillsborough. This is a great small community that is only about 15 minutes away, and offers a great family atmosphere with a diverse and liberal culture that you are seeking. The schools are also good. Please feel free to contact me via my webpage if you'd like additional information.

It sounds like you may want to look in the Chapel Hill- Carrboro area as a starting point and then spread out as you develop your knowledge of the area. The most important thing when moving is making sure you and your family are compfortable with the area you come home to every day after work and school. That could mean a lot of hours spent researching different websites looking for all the information- or you can take a look at my own website and just click on the various services we offer to our clients. We have a button to click on to download an extensive relocation package which give syou great area information. We also offer neighborhoods by price range and community name with a brief description. You can also set up a search through our MLS IDX link to have all the latest homes in the areas your prefer ( and price ranges you want ) sent directly to your email. We also have a GREAT links page and have a school comparison button that enables you to research area schools arnd compare them to each other and to the ones in your area.
