In addition to the excellent resources Larry provided, there is a local paper that runs listings for rentals frequently called "American Classifieds." You can probably access them online as well. The Winston Salem Journal also has a number of rentals possted regularly. Working with individuals has its pros and cons. On the up side is you may get a more flexible lease term; the down side may be that the owner is not financially stable themselves, although this could be the case even if going through a rental company. Another option is to look at nice homes that offer a lease with an option. There are a few of these available through the MLS. If that is something of interest, i would be happy to set up a link that would cover all of these homes for your review. Occasionall there are even new homes with lease options.
