Joyce Lee, Renter in New York, NY

is it realistic for an owner to sublet their luxurious 2 bedroom with all utilities included for only 700 by using airbnb?

Asked by Joyce Lee, New York, NY Thu Aug 2, 2012

The owner is out of the country but is using airbnb to do all transactions of documents and payments. he is making a copy of his passport for the renter's keeping. and also encouraging me to see the apartment before any money transaction is made to him until i tell airbnb to send the money to him . However, on this website i found the same apartment pictures located on the opposite side and ten blocks up north. what do i do?

No--Keep in mind that scams do exist, therefore always verify ownership before exchanging any money; also see links below...

If he is using airbnb, you cannot contact him outside the website. $700 will be more likely per week, or even per day. In any event, contact airbnb and tell them what's going on and flag the listing you found on other websites. This is the only way to stop scammers. I flag listings every day, there are quite a lot of scams unfortunately.

Ask for the address and check it out in property shark. If the name of the owner and address match what they are offering you should have no problem. If you definitely want somebody to check it out before sending payment, I can provide that service to you for only $150.

No it s NOT realistic. This most likely is a scam - stay away!

Most of the scams have the "owners" out of state........usually they ask for money to be sent va Western Union............in any event...........if it seems to good to be true - it isn't true!

What do you do?
Find an agent who can make sure you're not being scammed!
